Lot Essay

The drawings on the recto are similar to the life studies done in Rome and listed by Schiff as S. 542-3, 550. The raised left leg and head of the reclining man have been left in pencil alone. Professor Weinglass has suggested that the female nude, who appears to have some form of band or fetter round her waist, may be a study for Amoretta in Britomart freeing Amoretta from the Enchantment of Busibane, a drawing of 1793 (S. 1002; see also S. 1763) used later for the oil painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1824 (S. 1494).
