Traditionally attributed to Giambattista Tiepolo, the present picture was attributed to Ricci by Goering but was not known to Daniels even from a photograph. The composition is related to two works of the mid 1690s, 'The Last Communion of Saint Mary of Egypt', sold in these Rooms, 24 May 1991, lot 69, and even more particularly 'The Magdalen comforted by Angels' in the collection of Ferrucio Ferruzzi Balbi, Venice (Daniels, Sebastiano Ricci, p.139, no.477, and fig.343), in which the centre angel is closely paralleled
