A small (25 x 39cm.), unsigned version on copper is in the Hermitage (M. Stuffmann, Les Tableaux de la Collection de Pierre de Crozat, Gazette des Beaux-Arts, 1968, II, p.126, no.106, illustrated). That picture, which has a more open background, would seem to have been used for the engraving by Antoine Garnier (25.5 x 36.2cm.; C. Sterling, Les peintres Jean et Jacques Blanchard, Art de France, I, 1961, p.92, no.53, illustrated).
'Charity' was a favourite subject of Blanchard's in the years 1635-7, and can be seen in terms of a response to the contemporary vogue for the subject attendant upon Saint Vincent de Paul's work on behalf of orphans
