TWO ALSATIAN FLINTLOCK RIFLES almost forming a pair, with octagonal sighted barrels rifled with alternating deep and shallow grooves and struck at the breech with the mark of Hans Nicolaus Helbe (Støckel 483) and the Strasburg mark, signed border engraved rounded locks (one steel missing) sparsley chiselled with scrollwork in relief, and struck with Strasburg mark in front of the pans, walnut full stocks carved with scrolling foliage on each cheek-piece and fore-end (damaged and repaired), the former inlaid in engraved staghorn with a stag and hind in a landscape, staghorn patch-box covers engraved with scrollwork and a stag pursued by a hound in a landscape, iron mounts including spurred trigger-guards, one with ball finial, pierced and engraved serpentine side-plates, vacant escutcheons under engraved foliated crowns and framed by inlaid silver-wire scrollwork, engraved horn fore-end caps (one fore-end tip incomplete), and horn-tipped ramrods, by Helbe A Strasbourg, circa 1690
