A GERMAN FLINTLOCK SPORTING RIFLE with swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves, signed at the breech and struck three times with maker's mark, a leaf above (Neue Støckel 856), rounded lock engraved with foliage (one side-nail missing), walnut full stock, the fluted fore-end (slightly damaged) housing a sliding bayonet of flattened diamond section, the underside with prominent waved rib, the butt (wormed) with cheek-piece and patch-box cover, iron mounts including indented trigger-guard, scrolled side-plate, butt-plate (adapted) engraved with a flowerhead, and turned ramrod-pipes (one missing) mounted on the left of the fore-end, set trigger, and iron muzzle-band (ramrod missing), by Philip Opitz, Brunswig, circa 1700
