AN UNUSUAL GERMAN FLINTLOCK SPORTING RIFLE with swamped octagonal sighted barrel (back-sight missing) rifled with eight grooves and struck twice at the breech with barrelsmith's mark, a standing halberdier (Støckel 550), rounded lock chiselled with a design of lobed foliage, the inside with initials MT(?), figured walnut full stock partially carved with scrolling foliage in low relief, butt (broken through the grip) with cheek-piece carved with scrolling foliage beneath, patch-box cover carved with a design of broad-leafed foliage, iron mounts including pierced scrolled side-plate, crowned vacant escutcheon, butt-plate with bulbous heel and long tang, and spurred trigger-guard with grotesque finial (sling mount missing), all chiselled with designs of broad-leafed foliage, safety-catch chiselled with foliage, set trigger, reeded iron fore-end cap, and associated iron-tipped ramrod, circa 1700
