AN ALSATIAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING GUN with octagonal sighted barrel stamped at the breech with the Strasburg mark (Neue Støckel 1633) and the maker's mark (Neue Støckel 237), and retaining traces of its original blued finish, flat lock struck with a further Strasburg mark, pierced brass wheel-cover engraved with two confronted putti and a crown, engraved brass pan-cover release button and bridle to the cock-spring, the cock engraved with St. George and the Dragon, fruitwood full stock with fluted fore-end (cracked), the butt inlaid with horn pellets and scrolls enclosing finely engraved horn panels, behind the barrel tang a small plaque dated 1666, the cheek-piece with a stag beset by hounds within a landscape, the patch-box cover of staghorn engraved with a sportsman firing a wheel-lock rifle, a stag, and a hind, all within a landscape flanked by scrollwork, chiselled iron trigger-guard, set trigger, engraved horn fore-end cap, pierced and engraved horn ramrod-pipe, and horn-tipped ramrod, by Samuel Doepfer, Strasburg, dated 1666
