A FINE GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE with octagonal sighted barrel rifled with three broad grooves, the breech grooved and stamped with the rearing horse mark of Stuttgart and barrelsmith's mark IR, a turnip above, flat lock with exposed wheel and annular wheel-bracket, full stock profusely inlaid with staghorn plaques (minor replacements) mostly pierced and engraved with foliage, masks, scrolls, strapwork, fruit, animals and birds within horn lines, the background enriched with staghorn scrolls and pellets, behind the barrel tang an engraved staghorn plaque with the stockmaker's initials ANB, the last two letters conjoined, the patch-box cover engraved with a standing male figure playing a lute, engraved horn butt-plate (damaged), ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap, set trigger, iron trigger-guard, and associated horn-tipped ramrod, early 17th Century
