A PAIR OF BAVARIAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLES with signed and dated barrels rifled with ten grooves, flat locks struck with maker's mark HI, a horn beneath (Neue Støckel 2909) and with flat integral wheel-covers pierced and engraved with crowned double-headed eagle, engraved cocks and pierced bridles to the cock-springs, figured full stocks each with fluted fore-end, the butts and patch-box covers with panels of carved decoration in relief representing different scenes of the chase on each, each cheek-piece inlaid with a differing stag in dark horn within differing incised scrolls, flowers and foliage, behind each barrel tang the stamped stockmaker's initials AS with crossed keys (of Regensburg) beneath, set triggers, pierced iron trigger-guards, engraved dark horn ramrod-pipes and fore-end caps, horn butt-plates numbered '7' and '8', and horn-tipped ramrods (one associated), by Hieronymus Ilger, dated 1652

Lot Essay

The stockmaker, whose work is reminiscent of that of the so-called 'Meister der Tierkopfranke', is probably Andreas Schmidt of Regensburg
