INDENTM.M. London Gazette 3.5.1945 "On the night of 10/11 February 1945, D Company carried out a long advance into enemy held territory. Sergeant Sampson was commanding No. 11 Platoon. On approaching crossroads at the edge of the Reichswald Forest, the Platoon came under heavy fire, but Sergeant Sampson quickly attacked & inflicted many casualties on the enemy & silenced the post. Sergeant Sampson dashed into the wood & made prisoner the German Sergeant who was in charge. The Platoon captured 20 prisoners. Later, the Platoon carried out a difficult house clearing operation &, without loss, took several prisoners. Sergeant Sampson has constantly set a fine example to his men & had been outstanding for his leadership, energy & devotion to duty. On the 18 February he was evacuated, wounded, for the third time."
