INDENTReverend John Bernard King, Chaplain, R.N. survived the sinking of the Aircraft Carrier H.M.S. Glorious by gunfire from the German warship Scharnhorst, 9 June 1940 but lost his life on a Carley float the following day. Padre King was remembered as the one confident voice rising from the floats leading his fellow survivors in song as he had done so many times on board the carrier -- for over 20 hours he encouraged others to sing, and said prayers over those who had died before they were put over the side; in the end, his spirit was unable to sustain his body -- he died peacefully and without pain. Two and a half days after the action three officers and 35 men of the carrier's company were rescued; Padre King has no known grave

Goshawk) when the vessel was torpedoed and sunk by a U. boat, 17 January 1941, 350 west of Lewis in the Hebridies; all 194 passengers and 166 crew were lost
