Sergeant Gordon Joseph Smale, Air Bomber No. 101 Squadron (Lancasters) failed to return from bombing operations against Essen ("to the great regret of the whole Squadron this first class crew ...") and was reported missing, presumed killed in action, 21/January, 1943; all the crew were buried in Reichwald War Cemetery
