INDENTGeneral William Robert Clayton Costley (1780-1866) was appointed Cadet in the East India Company's Service, 1801 and became Ensign, 1/4th Native Infantry, Bengal Army the following year; Lieutenant 1804; he served during the Second Mahratta War and was present during the battle and capture of Deig, November and December, 1804 and took part in the pursuit of Holkar from Muttra; served with the same regiment during the Nepaul War, 1814; Captain 1817, Major 1826, Lieutenant Colonel 1831 and Colonel, 1842; was appointed Colonel-in-Chief 9th Native Infantry, 1851; Major General 1854, Lieutenant General 1856; was promoted General 1865 one year before his death in 1866
