Four Calligraphic Creatures

manuscript on thick buff paper, one in the form of four lions in green, red, blue and black, each formed of minute naskh qur'anic calligraphy combining to form elegant thuluth in the form of the animal's body, the four meeting in the gold head with the combined and reflected names of Allah and 'Ali, signed by Muhammad Shafi' al-Isfahani and dated 1290 , a second in the form of a black snarling lion similar filled with black naskh, signed by Husayn b. Ahmad al-Tabrizi, 1351, a third with two confronted red and blue similar doves, signed by 'Ali al-Kabir al-Kashani dated 1210 (for 1310?), the fourth with a green pear containing the bismillah on a red ground again all formed of fine naskh, signed by Assadullah al-Kashani and dated 1330,
