Lot Essay

The inscription has the bearer's name, title and the date.
Major General Sir Willoughby Keane, born in 1781, entered the army in 1793. In the Napoleonic Wars he served in Egypt (1801-2) and was then given command of the Island of Martinique. In 1833 he became Commader in Chief, Bombay, from which post he led the British Army in the First Afghan War to the capture of the city of Ghazni on 23rd. July 1839. He was created a Grand Commander of the order of the Bath on 12 August 1839. He died in England in 1844.
