Lot Essay

The initial is for Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany (1888-1941)

Sir William (1845-1914) was the second son of Robert John Smith, 2nd Baron Carington (1796-1868) and his second wife Charlotte (1815-1879), younger daughter of Peter Robert, Baron Willoughby de Eresby. He served in the Grenadier Guards, retiring as Lt.-Col. and was M.P. for Wycombe from 1868 until 1883. In 1871 he married Juliet, only daughter of Francis Warden, who died in 1913. He was Groom-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria 1880-1882, Acting Master of the Buckhounds 1883-1884, Equerry to Queen Victoria 1882-1901, extra Equerry to Edward VII and later to George V. He died without issue on 7 October 1914
