Lot Essay

Sir Henry Johnson (1748-1835) was born in Ireland and served with both the 28th Foot and 17th Foot in America before returning home at the surrender of York Town in 1781. In June 1798 he defeated the rebels during an attack on New Ross, was promoted Major-General the same year, and became a full general in 1809. He was created a baronet in 1818.

Two Freedom Boxes which were presented to Major-General Sir Henry Johnson commemorating his brave military action in New Ross, were sold at Christie's, 25 November 1987, lots 43 & 44
