Lot Essay

The laurel-bearing youths, perched on dolphins, perhaps recall the story of the poet Arion, who was rescued by a dolphin. A related small console table with youths riding on a dolphin, is in the Collection Viezzoli, Genoa, and is illustrated in Alvar Gonzàlez-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Milan, 1986, p. 358, illus. 753
