Lot Essay

This lot is sold with three prints of Samuel Parr, one of the great celebrities of his time, famous as a pedagogue, as 'the greatest scholar of the age' and as 'The Whig Dr. Johnson'. An ardent champion of civil and religious liberty, he was also notorious as 'a left wing parson'. A biography by Warren Derry was published by the Oxford University Press in 1966. A marble bust of him and his papers have been donated to the Bodleian Library
