Lot Essay

The bed, of couch form with paired bacchic lion-feet and hollowed sides wrapped by entwined 'Egyptian' cobras, reflects the antique style popularised by C. Percier and P. Fontaine's Receuil de décorations intérieures, 1801, and relates to fashionable bed-patterns published in 1804 in F.J.Bertuch and G.M.
