Lot Essay

The unusual profile of the waved apron is shared with three similar bureau-plats: one, interestingly also stamped by P. Roussel, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 11 February 1954, lot 78, while a second was sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 4 May 1984, lot 48. However, the exaggerated mouvmenté shape, combined with the distinctive moulded wooden edge, as opposed to brass, is displayed on a parquetry bureau plat stamped by E. Collet and sold in these Rooms, 9 December 1960, lot 185, similarities which are underlined by the closely related mounts flanking the central drawer
