Original tan calf, gilt, g.e. (lower inner hinge split).
Frances Elizabeth Courthope was the daughter of the Rev. Frederic Gardiner, rector of Llanvertherine, Monmouthshire. The journal gives a detailed account of two separate tours made by Frances and her genealogist husband William Courthope (1808-66) to Switzerland and the Savoy, including visits to Berne, Zurich and Geneva. The plates llustrate many of the places visited.
