LANE, N. Lane's Improved Globe [Terrestrial]; Lane's Celestial Globe. undated, [London, circa 1833].

A pair of terrestrial and celestial miniature table globes, diameter 3 inches (75mm), overall height 5 ½ inches (140mm). Each globe with 12 hand-coloured engraved gores, the terrestrial with north polar calotte, titles set in plain cartouches, that on the celestial a pasted overlabel, the terrestrial showing the tracks of Anson's voyage and Cook's Third Voyage (occasional light spotting to terrestrial). Metal pinions, set in original brass half-meridian circles graduated on one face, the pair mounted on baluster turned supports and circular bases.

A fine pair of miniature table globes, the north polar calotte accommadating the latest discoveries of the North West Passage. The discovery of Enderby's Land in the Antarctic is dated 1833. Enderby was discovered by Biscoe in 1831. Relatively little is known about Nicholas? Lane, he produced 3 or 4 pocket globes between 1780 and the mid 1830's, all either signed N.Lane or titled Lane's Improved Globe. cf. Van der Krogt Lae 5 (terrestrial).
