TOWNSEND, Dennis. Townsend's Folding Globe Pateneted Feb 16, 1869. Fletchville, Vermont, [1870]; together with the second issue Townsend's Patent Folding Globe. Published by George M.Smith, Boston and Dennis Townsend, Fletchville, Vermont, [1870 and later].
Two terrestrial collapsible globes, diameter 6 ½ inches (16mm). The globes each made up of two sets of lithograhed gores, hand-coloured in outline, the gores joined by pasted tabs, the poles set with rings, interior metal spring and rod system (the first issue slightly faded and rubbed at joins). Both contained in original board folders, pasted key on verso front board, upper covers titled (earlier issue lacking outer ties); together with the original patent label and a lithograph of the patent explanations for the first issue, an advertisement sheet for the Townsend globe by Savage and Co of New York, and other photocopies of relevant information.
This is the second edition of the Townsend globe, the first apparently not surviving. This example of the first issue is the Patent Office sample copy. cf.Der Globusfreund 35-37, 39-44; Warner 132. (2)
