A pair of library globes, diameter 21 inches (53 1/2 cm). Each globe comprising 2 sets of 18 hand-coloured engraved gores, the celestial gores laid to the ecliptic poles with elaborate constellation figures, the star positions taken from the star catalogue of Mr Wollaston.The terrestrial globe marking the tracks of Cook's third voyage, La Perouse and Vancouver in the Pacific, the voyages of Phipps (1773) to Spitsbergen, Pickersgill (1776) and Ross (1818) in search of the North-West Passage, both globes with original varnish (slightly discoloured and crackled, some minor abrasions to varnish surface, celestial with small cracks and slight loss at south pole). metal pinions, brass hour circles and meridian circles, graduated on one face, with groove on verso. Hand-coloured engraved horizon bars, varnished (several small cracks). The globes on three legged mahogany stands, with three quadrant supports carrying brass centrepost, turned and reeded legs with cross stretchers incorporating original compasses, the engraved compass scales signed J. and W. Cary, castors (legs and edges of horizon bars with minor abrasions, one compass cracked). Van der Krogt Car 12; Car 15.
