SENEX, John and Benjamin MARTIN. A New Caelestial Globe whereon the stars are carefully laid down from the correct observations of Mr Hevelins, Dr Halley &c...now made & sold with very considerable improvements by B. Martin in Fleet Street. London, n.d but circa 1760.

Celestial table globe, diameter 12 inches (31cm), overall height 16 inches (42cm). 12 engraved gores and polar calottes, hand-coloured in outline, elaborate title cartouche, the globe decorated with the constellation figures, lightly varnished (some light abrasion particularly to upper hemisphere, celestial pole neatly restored with minor loss. Brass meridian ring, graduated in degrees on one face, metal pinions, brass hour circle (lacking pointer). Hand-coloured engraved horizon ring with zodiac and calendar scales (cracked and restored in several places). The globe mounted on a Dutch style oak stand, the horizon ring supported by four turned pillar legs with cross-beams, base-plate and brass centrepost.

One of Benjamin Martin's earliest reissues of the Senex 12 inch globe, cf King p.69. The original plates for Senex's 12" globes were purchased at auction in 1755 by James Ferguson, who having published a pair of 12 inch globes in 1756, sold the plates on to Benjamin Martin in the same year.
