Lot Essay

There are similarities in the style and polychromy of the present Saint Paul, and a series of larger sculptures by Alonso Cano at the High Altar of Santa Maria de Oliva at Lebrija, executed between 1629 and 1631 (cf. H.E Wethey, Alonso Cano, 1955, pp. 148-9, figs. 19-27.).
