One of the most important painters in Valladolid in the first half of the sixteenth century, Vazquez's style combines the influences of Pedro Berruguete and Juan de Borgoña and is related to that of Juan Correa de Vivar. The present altarpiece, a notable addition to Vazquez's known oeuvre, is particularly close to the panels in the Church of the Convent of Santa Clara and the Church of Valdenebro de los Valles in his home town, both datable c.1530 (for which see J. C. Brasas Egido, El Pintor Antonio Vazquez, 1985, pls.28-9, 31-2 and 43)
