Agueda - see under literature below - no.83 'Otro en lienzo de 3 pies y 9 pulgadas de alto per 3 y 2 pulgadas de ancho. La Santisima Virgen, de medio cuerpo, con el Niño Dios, de cuerpo entero. Esta restaurado por Bueno y tiene marco de talla dorado ... Bartolomé Murillo') and subsequently at Pau, cat. no.579 (his cipher branded three times on the stretcher and on a piece of old canvas pinned to the stretcher), and by descent until sold, Christie's, 10 April 1987, lot 82

Lot Essay

Dated by Professor Angulo, loc. cit., c.1660-5, the present work was regarded by Curtis as a replica with slight variations of a picture in the Academia de San Fernando, Madrid; this was identified as a copy of the present painting by Angulo, who also records copies in the Juanas collection, Alcala, and the Son Veri collection, Palma de Mallorca, in the collections of the Duque de Maqueda and J. M. Rodes, Barcelona; Don Antonio Moscoso, Granada; Herminio Alvarez, José Bertolà and Pablo Sobrado, Madrid; in the church of Santa Ana, Guadalcanal, and in the Palacio Episcopal, Málaga
