The composition is related to a drawing in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, J. Brown, op.cit., no. 71, illustrated. A picture by a follower of Murillo, which may record a lost autograph painting, was formerly in the Bob Jones University. Professor Brown records the present drawing as a copy, but the differences between the black chalk underdrawing and the penwork indicate that it it is an independent study. Brown notes that the present drawing is closer in composition to the ex-Bob Jones University picture, which might suggest that this is a study for a lost prototype of this.

Dr. Priscilla Müller, on the basis of a photograph, does not accept the attribution to Murillo
