A 'FAÇON DE VENISE' LARGE CRISSELLED TWO-HANDLED VASE
Early 18th century, probably Venice

The double-ogee body applied with large strawberry prunts flanked by smaller strawberry prunts, the vertically ribbed lower part terminating in two rows of spiked gadroons, the cylindrical neck with a vermicular collar and with a broad everted folded rim, the reeded scroll handles applied with pincered ornament, supported on a ribbed compressed knop set between mereses above a domed and folded foot (some damage to pincered ornament of one handle, tip of one spike lacking below one handle terminal)

Although the somewhat unusual form of this vase does not appear to be recorded in the literature, comparison may be made to vases in the collection at Rosenborg Castle, see Gudmund Boesen, op. cit., nos. 17 - 19
