Lot Essay

By 1912 Hanson Walker was painting few portraits that were not of family or friends, and this is no exception. Dora Chevalier was a friend of his family who fell in love with and married Archie Garton, a boy in the house at Eton of which her father was housemaster. The couple lived at Pill Manor, near Shepton Mallet, and had two daughters - Jane, a ballet dancer, and Tim, who died after an unhappy love affair.

We are grateful to Lady Morse for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
