Lot Essay

The engraved source for some of the figures on this dish is a print attributed to Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael (Bartsch XIV, 209). Cf. the Abduction of Helen dish in the J. Paul Getty Museum and illustrated by Catherine Hess, Italian Maiolica, Catalogue of the Collection, no. 31 (together with the print source); another similarly painted dish formerly in the collection of Robert Strauss was sold in these Rooms, 21 June 1976, lot 47
