VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Autograph letter signed to Marie Escudier, Busseto, 21 May 1852, in which Verdi writes that productions at the Paris Opera, though put on with great expense, will never better or equal those at the Théâtre Italien because the company of singers is not as good, and he will not let his name be compromised by a poor French production of Ernani, 1½ pages, octavo, integral address leaf (some staining and creasing)
On this occasion Verdi writes to Marie rather than Léon Escudier, the two brothers who acted as his agents in Paris. The letter is significant in that it expresses Verdi's insistance on a good production which is why he argues against a French production of Ernani at this time, In questo persuasione io non posso consigliarvi a fare rappentare Ernani.
