APPIANUS (ca. 100 - ca. 170). Historia Romana. Latin translation of Petrus Candidus Decembrius (1399-1477) from the Greek. Venice: Bernhard Maler, Erhard Ratdolt and Peter Löslein, 1477.

Collation: a-i10 (a1 blank, a2 translator's dedication to Pope Nicholas V, a3-6 author's introduction incipit: Romanorum historiam scribere adorsus, a7r-e9r Libycus, c2r left blank by the editor to indicate lost text, e9v-h3r Syrius, h3v-i10v Parthicus); k-n8 o10 (Mithridaticus, o10r colophon, o10v blank). 132 leaves. Type 1:109R, 32 lines, marginalia. 9-line white-on-black woodcut initials, white-on-black woodcut vine-branch border on a2r (first use of the block). (Some small wormholes at beginning and end, slightly spotted in places.) 18th-century English red morocco gilt (rebacked with original spine). Provenance: Worms, Capuchins (inscription, a few manuscript notes); bookplate removed.
FIRST EDITION. Book 3, Parthicus, is a later Byzantine compilation. Part II, De Bellis Civilibus, was published at the same time by Maler and his partners, and was probably marketed both together with and separately from Historia Romana; its first appearance in print was also at Venice, with Wendelin von Speyer in 1472 (GW 2293).
