An interesting presentation copy of Carlyle's first work in book form, the title inscribed 'Benj.n Nelson from his old friend T.Carlyle'. Ben Nelson (1783-1845), a friend of Thomas Carlyle, set up as a timber and slate merchant in Annan, and in 1838 was appointed manager of the Southern Bank of Scotland. 58 copies of the work were issued privately.
