Large 2° (605 x 450mm). Printed title, dedication and 19 leaves of text, unsigned and unpaginated, title, preface and text in Latin and English, 34 engraved plates after J.van Rymsdyk, Edwards and Cozens, 11 with Hunter's date stamp (one shaved at outer margin, plate 19 with old repaired tear, plate 8 shaved at outer margin with slight loss and repaired, some spotting and light staining). Modern half sheep, joints slightly rubbed. Title with contemporary ownership note of an obstetric practice in Stockholm, dated 1780.

FIRST EDITION. Welcome III p.319; Russell 452; Gaskell 53. Hunter prepared 10 of these drawings as early as 1751, when he first advertised the work, but it was not until 1774 that the work was completed to his satisfaction. The quality and clarity of the plates makes this monumental work one of the great artistic achievements in medicine. For John Baskerville this was one of only two medical works published from his press.
