Rerum Anglicarum scriptores post Bedam praecipui, ex vetustissimis codicibus manuscriptis nunc primum in lucem editi. i.e. the works of William of Malmesbury (d.1143?), Henry of Huntingdon (1084?-1155), Roger of Hovendon (d.1201?), Ethelwerd (d.998?), and a forgery attributed to Ingulf Abbot of Croyland (d.1109). 2° in 6s (334 x 227mm.). Four section titles, each within a fine architectonic woodcut border (with monograms NH and TC, and dated 1574), woodcut initials. CONTEMPORARY LIGHT BROWN CALF GILT, BOUND FOR HENRY FREDERICK, PRINCE OF WALES, the covers with his centrally placed arms (cf.Davenport p.223) and a large badge of a Tudor rose, with a princely coronet (Davenport p.226) at each corner, all within a later ruled and roll-tool border in gilt and blind (neatly re-backed in morocco with raised bands and seven compartments, lettered in one compartment, the others with alternate portcullis and Tudor rose tools, corners repaired, ties lacking).
Provenance: John Lumley, Baron Lumley (1534?-1609, signature on title, on his death his library was purchased by James I for); Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (1594-1612, binding, on his death the library became part of the royal library. George III presented it to); British Museum (stamps and 1818 duplicate sale stamps on verso of first and last leaves.)
