PAULINI, I. [Alfabeto di iniziali animate da figure mitologiche su fondo di paesaggio e incorniciate da rettangoli ornate di figure e groteschi]. N.p. [Italy: circa 1560].

Oblong 4° (186 x 240mm.). 20 engraved plates for the letters of the alphabet, the first signed 'I. Paulini F.', no title issued. (First three plates slightly soiled). Modern vellum boards.

Only edition and apparently complete. Bonacini 1375 (mistakenly calls for 24 plates); this is based on the erroneous entry in Guilmard, Les Maitres Ornamentistes, p.293 describing the Foulc copy as having 24 plates, when in fact is was identical to our copy (described in the Foule sale catalogue no.462 with 20 plates); Bonacini also cites a Drugulin Catalogue copy with 20 plates; Berlin Katalog 5279, identical to this copy. The series comprises the letters A-I, L-V and Z, each capital letter formed of mostly mythological figures, surrounded by a grotesque border. Paulini is otherwise unknown except from a copy of a print by Agostino Caracci.
