GILDAS (516?-570? A.D.). Opus Novum. Gildas Britannus monachus... de calamitate excidio, & conquetu Britanniae. Edited by Polydore Vergil and R. Ridley. [Antwerp ?: C.Ruremond ?, 1525 ?].

8° (148 x 95mm.). A-E8 F4. Woodcut initials (some marginal notes close shaved). Early 18th-century speckled calf gilt, five compartment spine, red morocco lettering piece in one.

FIRST EDITION. Polydore Vergil (1470? - 1555?) edited Gildas' work during the course of his research for his own Anglicae Historiae. The printed version is the result of his collation of two manuscripts: one borrowed from the dedicatee Cuthbert Tunstall, the other in his posession. STC 11892 ('Not an STC book.'); NK 0562 (suggesting a French rather than a Netherlandish origin).
