MILNE, Alan Alexander (1882-1956). Autograph manuscript signed of an entertainment, a dialogue between two comic characters. Wrench and Weekes, inscribed on the last page 'written for Private H.J. Wrench 94th R.War/wickshire/Regt.) in 1917 by A.A. Milne', written in ink on lined paper, characters and stage directions underlined in red, 7½ pages, 4to, on 8 leaves, (slight discolouration, the last two leaves worn at folds).

A dialogue between an illusionist and an insubordinate accomplice, with jokes and gags referring to army life, mispronunciations of French words, constant interruptions of one character by the other and backchat based on misunderstandings. The First World War interrupted A.A. Milne's literary career. He served with the Warwickshire Regiment as a signalling instructor, was at the Somme, and in 1917 was in England, for some months recovering from 'trench fever'. His first comic fantasy Wurzel Flummery was staged in the same year.
