Lot Essay

Probably painted in 1936 for an exhibition at the Esher Surrey Gallery in the Hague, Le Géant is a variation on the intricately veined leaf-tree image first realised in 1935. An oil painting almost identical to this, also painted in 1936, was lost at sea.

To be included in the Magritte catalogue raisonné being compiled under the direction of David Sylvester.
