Lot Essay

A study for one of the planned series of marble reliefs of scenes from the Book of Genesis designed by Bandinelli for the octagonal recinto in Florence Cathedral. Bandinelli drew the studies between September 1547 and April 1548, he abandoned the project after Cellini, his arch-rival, repeatedly interfered trying to win the commission. The subject, identified by Ward is based on Genesis 5, 28-9; the composition is inspired by the fresco attributed to Dello Delli of the same subject in the Chiostro Verde, Santa Maria Novella, Florence. Other drawings related to the project are listed by Ward, op.cit., 1988, under no. 39
