Lot Essay

The figures in the foreground are similar to the ones in the first state of Jaques Callot's etching: Le Marché d'Esclaves, J. Lieure, Jacques Callot, Paris, 1927, II and IV, no. 369, illustrated. This drawing is presumably a preparatory study for the second state of this etching, executed after Callot's death, by Israel Silvestre or an assistant. In the second state Israel Silvestre added a view of Paris in the background to Callot's plate
