Lot Essay

A preparatory drawing for the figures of the father and son in The first Furrow, or a Farmer handing over the Plough to his Son in the presence of his Family in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow, presented at the Salon of 1801. The father is handing over to his son his plough thanking God for this moment of happiness. This late picture is unusual for the frieze like composition set in a landscape. Each of the poses adopted are characteristic of Greuze's compositions; the present drawing itself recalls the study made by Greuze for The Departure of the young Savoyard in the Louvre dating from 1767, showing a striking consistency in the artist's technique
