Lot Essay

Finished pen drawings of this type, recalling contemporary engravers, were probably inspired by Matham's stepfather Hendrick Goltzius. Matham drawings of this type are discussed by William Robinson in his entry on a comparable Portrait of a Man dated 1603 in the Abrams Collection, see Seventeenth Century Dutch Drawings; a selection from the Maida and George Abrams collection, Amsterdam, 1991, no. 6
