Two painted self-portraits of Mengs, both dated 1774 in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Uffizi, confirm that this is indeed a likeness of the artist of this date. The latter is particularly comparable, since it too shows Mengs with somewhat disordered hair and pencil in hand
