Lot Essay

Although no marking on this group can be found which positively identifies it as having come from the Malines workshops, on stylistic evidence there can be no doubt. The almond shaped eyes of the Virgin, and the distinctive carving of the hair in rows of C-shaped curls find close parallels in a Malines Virgin and Child at the Musée Grobet-Labadié in Marseille (op. cit. II/157). Similarly, the drapery, falling in slight V-folds and obscuring the form of the Virgin beneath, is typical of many Malines works. The present object, with its strong central axis and elongated proportions, is a particularly elegant example of Flemish craftsmanship; it is enlivened by the human element of Christ tugging at the tassles of his mother's cloak.
