Lot Essay

The original marble version of this statue was discovered in the mid 16th century, along with the Borghese Vase, on the site of the gardens of Sallust. Part of the Borghese collection from at least 1638, it was bought from Prince Camillo Borghese by his brother-in-law Napoleon in 1807, when it moved north to France. It resides today in the Louvre, although later versions exist in numerous other collections.
