Lot Essay

Stylistically the present bronze is very close to one of two Atlas supports by Gabriele Brunelli (1615-82) on either side of the Palazzo Davia Bargellini in Bologna (cf. Riccòmini, op.cit.). However, this type of Atlas support can also be found in the work of Permoser and his associates on their decoration for the Zwinger Parade Place in Dresden, built for Frederick August, Prince of Saxony and King of Poland, in the early part of the 18th century (cf. Asche, op.cit.).
